Finale
Vengeance, rage, retribution-as the motives behind the murder are revealed, the weight of Geralt’s guilt manifests-is justice his to deliver or will penance require a sacrifice?
Writer: Bartosz Sztybor
Sztybor brings us full circle back to the beginning of the tale in this finale. The Laima has been possessing women after her body was burnt in issue 1 to take vengeance on the men of the village. They’ve been abusing and selling off their wives, sisters and daughters and she seeks to kill them all.
In the body of Giltine, she orders the dead fathers men to attack Geralt and he is finally overcome and tied to a chair. KNocked out his guilt manifests as the Laima burning him at the stake and he awakens to storming into the village to kill the men including the barkeep from the last issue.
The final conflict and resolution leave a bad taste in your mouth as a good Witcher tale should.
Artist: Vanesa del Rey
Del Rey work in this issue is hurried, angry and much, much darker in her tone than the previous issues. Some panels are pure black with the orange glow of the Witcher’s eye’s all that penetrate out towards the reader. The wooded borders feel claustrophobic, like being trapped in a dark forest.
Overall Thoughts
This moral tale of guilt, vengeance and anger fits well in the universe of the Witcher with a sting in the tail coming back to force Geralt into action. Geralt’s guilt is never really solved and he wears it as another scar.
