BLOOD + SAND
The war for the very survival of the human race has begun! A mysterious new vampire lord has already put a plan in motion to conquer the Earth, and the first step is—destroy the Justice League! But the World’s Greatest Detective might be Earth’s last hope, and it’s time for the Bat-Family to hunt!
Writer: Matthew Rosenberg, James Tynion IV
So the big shock of last issue was that Green Lantern Hal Jordan is a vampire and is working for the new Master Vampire to nullify the threat to the vampires metahumans exhibit. First, deal with the villians (see Leagion of Doom from issue #1), then as we start this issue we see they have moved on to magica beings and then the final plan is to sow seeds within the heroes against each other.
Batman has othere ideas though, and tells the Bat family of the threat, while testing that none of them (including Alfred) are vampires. He’s blessed the hot water boiler to make any baths or showers holy and hosts a meeting in the sunroom.
The big reveal is that Green Arrow is also fighting the vampires and saving the villains is a good distraction, but the point of Tynion and Rosenberg is that you can’t trust anyone at the moment.
Artist: Otto Schmidt
Schmidt’s work on the standard cover and internal artwork is at it best in the first three pages and the final two pages. We see Hal fully focus his will to defeat friends and foes with horrific consequnces and Schmidt wonderfully pays with angles and panels to give us a front row seat.
Overall Thoughts
Mixing a mystery and a horror fantasy play well into the DC Universe with Batman front and centre to identify the vampires and stop the secret threat to the heroes and villians alike. Schmidt’s version of Hal Jordan kills characters in horrific ways to perfectly bookend this issue with his stunning artwork that heightens the tension between each book.
